The Hidden Threat of Moss
Many homeowners view moss as a minor cosmetic nuisance that adds a rustic look to their driveway. However, moss is a highly destructive plant that can cause serious, permanent damage to your paving if it is not regularly cleared. Here is how moss actively works to destroy your driveway surfaces.
1. Water Retention and Frost Damage
Moss acts like a sponge, absorbing and holding large amounts of water directly on and between your paving blocks. During the winter, this trapped water undergoes freeze-thaw cycles. As the water freezes, it expands with immense force, widening cracks in concrete, crumbling asphalt, and dislodging block paving joints.
2. Root Penetration and Surface Crumbling
While moss does not have traditional deep roots, it uses tiny hair-like structures called rhizoids to anchor itself to surfaces. These rhizoids penetrate into the tiny pores of concrete, natural stone, and asphalt. Over time, they break down the surface binder, causing concrete to spall (flake) and asphalt to crumble and disintegrate.
3. Structural Instability
For block paving driveways, moss thrives in the sand joints. As the moss grows, its physical bulk pushes the jointing sand out of the gaps. Once the sand is washed away, the paving blocks lose their structural lock, allowing them to shift, wobble, and sink under the weight of vehicles.
